These fabulously talented folks will be offering several workshops over the weekend, and they’ll be around to jam and to play in a concert.
Hen’s Teeth is a unique American Roots and Old Time Music duo featuring the unusual combination of Fiddles, Clawhammer banjo and Cello. Janie and Nathan are powerhouse and highly inventive American roots musicians who specialize in traditional and original American traditional style music including sprightly reels and sweet waltzes, with fine traditional style singing and the occasional wild impromptu foray into improv and jazz!
Hen’s Teeth music is firmly rooted in the American Old Time tradition but also takes on a completely unique sound that is a result of their own inventive, soulful, wild and improvisational approach to their music. This is American roots music at its most dynamic, full of power, soul, creativity and whimsy.
ABOUT HEN’S TEETH
Janie Rothfield (from Philadelphia) and Nathan Bontrager (an American who currently lives in Cologne, Germany) formed Hen’s Teeth in 2016 after playing non-stop at the Clifftop Appalachian Stringband Festival-it was there they discovered the sympatico connection between Janie’s Fiddling and Nathan’s Cello playing, their double fiddle and clawhammer banjo combo’s and a sweet melding of their two voices. Since then, they have done two tours in Europe performing at venues and teaching music workshops in England, Scotland, Belgium, Holland and Germany. In Spring 2016, they fit in time enough, mid-tour, to record their first CD, titled OFF THE CUFF AND ON THE FLY, which features traditional and original tunes and songs (many written by Janie Rothfield) that pay homage to the old time traditional music they love, while stretching the sounds, rhythms, harmonies and texture of that music that is deep and unique! Hen’s Teeth Spring 2017 European tour takes them to Scotland, England, Germany and Holland for concerts and teaching workshop and weekends. They will be recording a new CD of Old Time Music with a brand new ensemble with Fiddles, Viola and Cello-The Appalachian String Quartet. Summer 2017 adventures include Clifftop Appalachian Stringband Festival, ZigZag Music Weekend and shows in the NW (Late Aug-early Sept), and another tour to the NW in January-February 2018 with an appearance at the Bellingham Folk Festival!
